X Premium puts analytics, Grok, and four ways to get paid behind one subscription. The plan comes in two tiers: Premium ($8/month or $84/year) and Premium+ ($16/month or $168/year), which adds Grok and higher usage limits. Whether you post for work or just want fewer ads and a blue check, the math is simple: what you use is what you pay for.
Analytics: what you actually get
Premium unlocks the full analytics dashboard, not the trimmed-down version free accounts see. That means four numbers worth tracking:
- Impressions: how many times your posts are seen. Reach is the floor, not the goal.
- Engagement rate: interactions divided by impressions. Anything under 1% on X is normal for most accounts; above 3% is unusually strong.
- Follower growth: how your audience count changes over time. Watch the trend line, not the daily bumps.
- Video completion rate: what share of viewers finish your video. Halfway-through drop-offs usually mean the hook didn't land or the middle sagged.
These four numbers are enough to figure out what's working. You don't need a third-party dashboard for a single-account strategy.
Grok: Premium+ only
Grok, the chatbot from xAI, is gated to Premium+, not base Premium. Three things it does on X:
- Reasoning and coding help: it can work through multi-step problems, write or debug code, and pull from current information without a separate search.
- Image processing: it reads images you share with it, useful for drafting alt text or summarizing screenshots.
- Higher usage limits: base Premium gives a stripped-down Grok. Premium+ removes the rate caps and unlocks the heavier models.
For drafting posts, answering questions, or summarizing a long thread, Grok saves real time. For most casual posters, base Premium's truncated Grok is more than they'll touch.
Monetization: five ways to get paid
X splits creator earnings into five programs. Eligibility varies, and most creators only qualify for two or three.
Ad Revenue Share. Earn a cut of ad revenue from posts that show ads. To qualify, you need 5 million impressions in the past 90 days and at least 500 followers. The bar is high enough that this is a mid-tier program, not an entry point.
Creator Subscriptions. Sell exclusive posts to paying subscribers, who get special content, early releases, and other perks. Eligibility starts at 500 followers, 10 posts in the past 30 days, and being at least 18. This is where most new creators begin, because recurring income from even a small subscriber base compounds.
Super Grok. The Premium+ add-on for higher Grok usage, billed separately from your subscription tier. It bundles higher rate limits, image generation, and the more capable Grok models. Useful if Grok is doing real work for you, not just novelty chat.
Tip Jar and Payments. Followers send one-time payments to support your work. Eligibility: 18+, account in good standing, Stripe connected. No follower threshold, so it's available immediately. Tip Jar is the simplest way to test whether your audience will pay you anything.
Ticketed Spaces. Host paid live audio events: workshops, Q&As, panel discussions. Ticket price and capacity are set per event. This is niche, but margins are 100% minus X's cut, and there's no equivalent on most platforms.
Other features in the subscription
Beyond analytics and monetization, Premium includes a stack of usability upgrades:
- Post editing: fix typos within an hour of publishing. Free accounts can't edit at all.
- Longer posts and videos: up to 25,000 characters and 3-hour videos.
- Text formatting: bold and italics in posts, which still matters because most free accounts can't.
- Fewer ads: roughly half the ad load of the free tier, according to X's own description.
- Verification badge: the blue checkmark. It's mostly a status signal now, since X sells it separately from identity verification.
- Premium themes: exclusive profile layouts and color schemes.
Together these add up to a feed that's less cluttered and a profile that looks more deliberate. Whether that's worth $8 a month depends on how much you post.
Beta features
Premium+ subscribers get early access to features X is still testing, including the ability to hide posts from your profile without deleting them. Useful for cleaning up old content you don't want surfaced without nuking the post entirely.
Is X Premium worth it?
Three tests:
- If you post less than once a week and don't care about analytics, skip it. The free tier is fine.
- If you post for work and want analytics, the verification badge, and post editing, base Premium at $8/month pays for itself the first time you catch a typo in the editing window instead of deleting and reposting.
- If you're a creator trying to monetize, the math is at least 500 followers for subscriptions, 5 million impressions for ad share. Premium ($8/month) plus Creator Subscriptions (free to set up) is the entry path. Premium+ ($16/month) is worth it only if Grok is doing real work for you or you want higher usage caps.
X Premium isn't transformative. It's a pricing tier. The features are real, the analytics are useful, and the monetization programs are the most concrete way X pays creators. Whether it's worth paying for depends entirely on whether you'll use what you're buying.
